Co-LAB Gallery Launch Party

This is a first for us guys.  We cannot begin to explain how excited we are that we were picked to be a part of Co-LAB Gallery’s opening.   Not only for the sake of it being our first gallery + retail store combined but also due to the amazing talent that shared the space with us.

Be sure to go check out the gallery + retail store for yourself at 3952 Wilshire Blvd, L.A.!  A block from the Wiltern in lovely Koreatown you’ll find the Co-LAB gallery in an old fish tank store.  The owners even decided to reuse many pieces for display, we love savvy repurposing like-minded artists!

Thankful hearts + homes

The month of November has been full of thanks + gratitude. Aside from being thankful for family, friends, home + happiness we are thankful for nature + all she provides to us.  Not only does nature provide our environment + our daily necessities, she also provides us with bountiful, inspiring beauty.  Today we’re featuring a few of natures special autumn pieces that are dispersed within our own home to remind us of how intertwined we are with everyone + everything in life.  It reminds us not only of the beauty of that sentiment but also how important it is to always be thoughtful + thankful as we make our way through the world.

Here are some photos of our little collection! It doesn’t take a lot of money when nature is your decorator.  Take a walk in the woods or nearby park or take a trip to your nearest farmer’s market to collect all of your natural Thanksgiving decorations!

Wishing you all a truly wonderful, happy + grateful Thanksgiving!

Cheers!

Make It Better! Sandy Relief Craftalong

We here at Merrily Yours are fortunate to say that all of our loved ones on the East Coast were spared by Superstorm Sandy + we are so very thankful for that but we know that there are many people who weren’t so lucky.  With an impending Nor’easter on Sandy’s heals the stakes are even higher for those who still do not have power, shelter or food.  We are asking all of our crafty friends to do their part to make it better by using their hearts + talents to crochet, knit + felt some wonderfully warm + needed gifts of hope through mittens, hats, scarves + blankets.  We will be donating our wares to the Sandy Relief Craftalong + YOU should too! Please SEND PROJECTS TO: Natalie Soud, Soho Grand Hotel, 310 W. Broadway, New York, NY 10013.

We also ask our friends who are able to please donate what they can afford to the American Red Cross at redcross.org as the relief efforts will continue to need our support.

We thank you all for your efforts!

xo Jenn

If Van Gogh embroidered…

If Van Gogh embroidered and time traveled he might have created something like this…

Matthew Cox is a Philadelphia- based artist who brings mixed-media to a new level with his combination of embroidery and medical x-rays.  The result is a stunning cross of warm outward appearances and cold inward realities. Cox’s artwork can be found in exhibits including the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Georgetown College Art Gallery among many others.   Visit http://matthewcoxartist.com/ to view the full collection.

Merrily Yours Newsletter

Dear Merrily Yours Friends,

It’s been a crazy few months but I have not forgotten about you!  Since so much has happened I thought I would update you while sending my very first Newsletter!

Big News!
Merrily Yours has been accepted into the Renegade Craft Fair Holiday Market in Los Angeles to be held at the Los Angeles Historic Park (1245 N. Spring St, L.A.) on December 10 + 11!  If you haven’t experienced Renegade Craft Fair before it’s a great opportunity to check out talented local crafters, artists and entrepreneurs.  Not in the LA area? There’s a good chance there is a Renegade Craft Fair near you, check out renegadecraft.com for more information!

I am so thrilled to be a part of this established and fantastic fair, not only do I feel incredibly privileged to have been accepted by the jury but I am also so excited to have my first public showing of Merrily Yours!  Now that I’ve had time to celebrate with happy, silly jigs it’s time to get down to work and boy do I have a lot of work to do!  My To-Do list ranges from thinking of new holiday items, stocking up on inventory, searching for potential upcyling display pieces and sprucing them up DIY-style, designing an amazing booth and everything in between.  All this while keeping my head on straight, phew. :)

 Getting down to business!
To help me keep on track and tackle the holiday season head on I’ve signed up for the Etsy Success Holiday Boot Camp .  The Boot Camp is a 9-week program series that guides each participant through all of the nitty gritty bullet points they should improve upon to make the most of their business during the holiday season.  Weekly lessons include: budgeting, promoting, staying organized, photography, setting holiday shipping deadlines and more.  We were asked to find a buddy to help keep us accountable and each week we are sent a new list of To-Dos and lessons to help stay on target.  My buddy is Jessica at Little Partridge, her burp cloth cupcakes & tutus are too adorable!

Because this is my very first craft fair and my very first holiday season selling it is my aim to share all of these moments with you with monthly updates through my newsletter and weekly updates through my blog merrilyyours.com.  It’s going to be an adventure to remember and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you!

Merrily yours,

Jennifer

Super Kenneth to the Rescue

It’s been a crazy few weeks with family in town, birthdays, work schedules and holiday season preparations but I have not forgotten about you, my Merrily Yours friends!  To make up for my lack of communication I’ve asked Super Kenneth to stop by with all of his furry goodness.  Rest assured I will be adding lots of fun new posts very soon!

Photo Embroidery

Everyday I find new and inspiring ways to utilize embroidery. I just can’t get over how colored floss can translate into an endless variety of exquisite details and I get giddy with excitement when I find artists who take embroidery to the next level. Enter Photo Embroidery the technique of layering embroidery over photos to create an intriguing, fresh medium.

http://trendland.net/2011/07/23/it-came-from-the-sky-by-maurizio-anzeri-and-richard-burbridge/#

This collection is the collaboration of photographer Richard Burbride, artist Maurizio Anzeri and stylist Robbie Spencer from the Dazed and Confused June 2011 issue and featured on Trendland.  The trio have literally brought embroidery to the next dimension by bringing black and white photos to life with a balanced yet bursting combination of linear and unstructured techniques. I am incredibly inspired by the concept and execution of these pieces and would love to visit the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK to see them in person.  For now I’ll settle for viewing them online while I anxiously await getting back to my thread and needle.

Power in Gifting

Gifting has always been one of the biggest joys of my life.  I truly love everything about it, I love showing someone I care, that I’ve thought of them, that I listen, that I “get them.”  I love the element of surprise and the anticipation of the unveiling of the gift.  Above all else I love coming up with a completely unique and personal handmade gift specifically for that person.

To me a handmade gift is unmatched by any store bought item, ever.  I can recall nearly all of the gifts I’ve made over the years starting with my kindergarten macaroni Christmas ornaments, to a poem surrounded by delicate colored pencil shavings (it was the epitome of art to me as an 8-year-old) to a series of knitted scarves I made post-college.  Recently what I’ve found is that the inspiration, thought and effort put behind a personal handmade gift usually generates an amazing item, often I’m told I should make more.  When looking over my Etsy shop I realize that every one of my items came from a spontaneous gift idea for someone I care for.

I think it goes to show there is Power in Gifting, the combination of love, excitement and the goal of an exceptionally perfect gift brings something really magical and wonderful to the crafting table.
